Private School/College Application Essays

Lori Cidylo is the founder and owner of Magic Carpet Learning Tutoring Center.  

Lori holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Columbia University.  She has a Masters degree in Writing, also from Columbia, as well as a dual Masters degree in Regular and Special Education from Manhattan College.  She is trained in Orton-Gillingham, a multi-sensory method for teaching reading which research has shown to be highly effective with dyslexic students.

Prior to opening Magic Carpet Learning, Lori was a Special Education teacher for Quaker Ridge Elementary School in Scarsdale.  She pulled students with IEPs out of their classrooms for more specialized small group instruction in reading, writing, and math. In addition to writing IEPs for her students, she did CSE testing for the district of Scarsdale.

Lori also has experience with mainstream students.  She was a middle school and high school English teacher in New York City.

As a published writer, Lori is uniquely positioned to help students with writing. She is the author of a collection of essays about the collapse of communism in Russia.  All the Clean Ones Are Married: And Other Everyday Calamities in Moscow was a New York Times Book Review “Best Travel Book of the Year.” It is currently available in paperback on Amazon.com.

Lori has been a guest lecturer at Harvard, Columbia, and Brown.
